Watering System Cuts Dust Control Costs for Solar Farm Build

Watering system

Summary

A solar power construction project in California's Mohave Desert faced significant delays and costs due to water management issues, including pump failures, tank overfills, and wasted resources. United Rentals stepped in with a right-sized fluid management solution, saving the contractor money, reducing labor and fuel costs, improving dust control, and enabling faster project completion to support renewable energy goals.

Challenge

The inefficient water management system at a solar power construction site in California's Mohave Desert led to frequent pump breakdowns, lack of backups, manual shutoffs, and tank overfills. This caused wasted water, downtime, EPA fines, increased costs, and delays in dust control efforts.

Impact

United Rentals’ fluid management system led to $15,000 in monthly water cost savings, the elimination of California EPA fines, reduced labor and fuel costs, improved dust control with the addition of a fifth water truck, and overall faster project completion to support renewable energy development.
