According to OSHA standards, a personnel retrieval system is required for entry into any permit-required confined space. This ensures that a worker can be safely extracted in an emergency. An exception may apply if the retrieval equipment is determined to increase the overall risk to the worker, but for most scenarios like vertical entry into manholes or tanks, a retrieval system is a mandatory safety component.
The weight capacity of a davit arm system varies by model and configuration. Systems are rated separately for personnel and materials, with strict safety factors built in for personnel applications. Our davit arm systems have a personnel capacity of 360 pounds, and some systems, like the Mobile “H” base are certified for two people.
Yes, davit arm systems are dual-purpose and can be used for both personnel retrieval and fall arrest. They are designed for both safely lowering and lifting personnel or materials into a confined space and for fall arrest. When used with a self-retracting lifeline (SRL) lanyard, the system can act as an anchor point to arrest a fall. In the event of an incident, the system's winch can then be activated to retrieve the worker.
