FAQs About Temporary Safety Guardrails
United Rentals provides durable, easy-to-install, OSHA-compliant temporary guardrail systems for rent. Also known as safety railings or temporary handrails, these systems are essential for protecting workers from falling into open excavations, trenches and manholes. Our durable construction railings come in 5.5, 7.5, 9.5 and 11.5-foot configurations and are painted for high visibility. Our free-standing guardrail systems use mounting brackets for various trench and manhole applications, eliminating the need to drill into surfaces. Their simple construction requires no tools for assembly, and the systems can accommodate signs, flags or lights for added visibility on the jobsite. United Rentals carries the guardrail rentals you need for your next excavation or trench application from trusted brands like Tie Down.

Temporary guardrails are required whenever there is a fall hazard of 6 feet or more into an unprotected side or edge, such as an open excavation, trench or manhole. They serve as a primary barrier to prevent workers from accidentally falling into these openings. Always consult current OSHA standards to ensure compliance with your specific jobsite conditions.
According to OSHA standards, the top rail of a guardrail system must be able to withstand a force of at least 200 pounds applied in any downward or outward direction at any point along the top edge. This ensures that the railing provides adequate protection against falls.
OSHA requires that the top edge of a temporary guardrail must be 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, above the walking or working surface. This height is designed to effectively prevent workers from falling over the railing.
